Frankfurt 2009: Melkus RS2000 provides thrills with history for big money

Three years ago Melkus, the historic, East German race car builder, released renderings of a gullwing sports car they wanted to have ready in 2009. It always makes us happy to see the passionate guy make big plans and then get them achieved – on time even – and the Melkus RS2000 is the culmination of that achievement. Based on an Elise, it rides on a Melkus-designed aluminum double-wishbone suspension and wears a glass-fiber reinforced polyester body.
Power comes from the 1.8-liter, 16-valve, 4-cylinder Elise tuned up to 270 hp that shifts through a short-throw 6-speed transmission. With a curb weight of 950 kg (2,090 pounds) you can get to 60 in 4.9 seconds. Interiors can be customized as you wish, but the car comes standard with more creature comforts than you'll find in most of its competition, including the Elise. The Melkus' creation did come with a price: the original estimates were for it to cost €75,000; the actual price is €107,500. But what's a little inflation between friends.

Marussia B2: Russia's Second Super Car

What happens when newly-monied Russians design a super car?
You get the successor to the first Russian super car, the B1. It's the Marussia B2 and it's got looks to shame a Ferrari Enzo and, supposedly, a 420HP Cosworth mill.
We weren't holding out much hope for the Marussia B2, but it's turned out to be one of the pleasant surprises of the Frankfurt Motor Show .We're still a little foggy on the details, but it seems the Marussia B2 is built on the same frame as it's B1 predecessor but gets a specially built 3.5 liter Cosworth V6, ranging from 245 HP to 420 HP. Whatever the powerplant, it's hard to argue on the looks — the thing is bad ass. It's got more cut lines than a knife fighter and while the forward visibility is probably pretty terrible, awesomely ridiculous is the only way we can describe it.

When you're at Bonneville you see all sorts of crazy contraptions while walking (and driving) around the five mile long pit and spectator area. You witness things that can rocket to speeds just shy of 400 miles per hour to things that are created to look the best while flossing at 20 miles per hour. Basically, you see the whole spectrum from pure performance to pure hardparking. It's phenomenal to be able to to be able to take all of this at a single event.
With such an eclectic mix of cars, you also meet an eclectic mix of people. The owner of this rat rod is one of those crazy individuals that travelled long distances to attend the cultural festival at the Salt. He drove his RV with the car trailer from Vancouver, Canada to the Utah. He is 100% devoted to hot rod culture. And the build quality of this 'rat rod' even questions if we should even categorize it as that. Rod and I met and conversed with this fellow, Ken (from Top 10 Hot Rod & Customs) before we even saw the car. When he mentioned something to the nature of, "hey do you want to see my car?" The response came out instantly: "Yes Ken, we DO want to see whatever you have!"
We had absolutely no clue what to expect when we walked to the car trailer and those doors opened...

What laid before us was a 1930 Ford coupe rat rod. A car that barely even held onto the idea that it is, indeed, a rat rod. But what this car did have was an absolutely menacing presence and that each and every nut, bolt, and piece of metal on the car seemed like it radiated with history. And as we talked to Ken a bit more, we soon found out that assumption was true. Every part on this car has a vintage going to the late 50s.

Freestyle rider Chris Pfeiffer took a BMW F 800 R to the top of the 22-story BMW Tower in Munich, then decided to play around with it. What that means is two minutes and ten seconds of gymnastic 2-wheeled goodness that would be impressive enough were it happening at ground level. The hybrid Marussia B1 was unveiled last year, and can now be ordered for €100,000 (about $146,000 USD) while it is being prepared for serial production. Two of them will be on display at next week's the Frankfurt Motor Show alongside the company's latest car, the Marussia B2, being teased in the photo above. We don't know anything about the new model except that it has been "created in the style of a jet fighter."

It’s still in the build phase but I already love the way the car is evolving.

While the word supercar has been used in connection with both current and past GT-Rs, Tommy Kaira seemed to think that supercar performance should be united with supercar looks and created a fanboy’s wet dream in the process. The ZZ-II debuted in 2001 and still is remarkable by today’s standards. The details on the car seem to be pretty sketchy, but most seem to agree that it is in excess of 500hp and it retains the RB26 and ATTESSA. Not to mention the fact that it weighs only 1000kg (2200lbs). In any case, the result was stunning and I’d like to see this car resurrected with R35 GT-R hardware.

Yoshimura is perhaps best known for their aftermarket exhaust systems for motorcycles and their racing efforts, but the company has produced some very interesting complete bikes that are probably somewhat analogous to RUF, just on two wheels. While the machines tend to be based on traditional production superbikes, they are modified to the degree that they wear only the Yoshimura badge. All of the complete bikes have highly limited production runs and are have thoroughly exotic spec sheets. The company’s philosophy seems to be a combination of an Opera level of attention to detail with a Top Secret level of insanity.

BMW never designed the F800R to be a scrambler, but that didn’t stop Touratech, the touring and parts specialists, to build what they call The Streetline F800 ScrambleR by only making use of a few styling tweaks.

By using clip-ons, a round headlight, bash guard, scrambler-style tyres and a numberboard among others, Touratech achieved what BMW never thought at and they even plan on selling a kit with all the parts, enabling BMW F800R owners to build their own scrambler.

1018hp Koenigsegg Trevita- The greatest car ever made?

Today Koenigsegg have released details of there latest incarnation, the Koenigsegg Trevita. The Trevita is a limited edition Koenigsegg CCXR featuring a new shimmering diamond carbon fiber finish.

Koenigsegg’s are famous worldwide for their visible carbon fiber weave finish, which up until now has only been available in the traditional black carbon fibre finish. But now Koenigsegg has developed a new Diamond Weave Finish, while still retaining the potential output of 1018bhp.
For the Trevita, Koenigsegg is using a new and unique method to manufacture the carbon fibre material called The Koenigsegg Proprietary Diamond Weave. This is where they have managed to coat the individual fibres with a diamond finish. This fiber treatment is conducted carefully in small quantities, prior to further processing the prepreg material. This process was fully developed by Koenigsegg at their headquarters in Ängelholm Sweden.
Only three Trevita’s will be made by Koenigsegg, hence the name, making the Trevita the rarest member of the Koenigsegg Family.
All three cars will feature the Koenigsegg Shimmering Diamond Weave bodywork, double carbon rear wing, inconell exhaust system, carbon ceramic brakes (with ABS), airbags, paddle shift, chrono instrument cluster, infotainment system, tyre monitoring system and a lifting system.

In the "They MUST build it" category: The homemade ION electric sport bike

Two months. That’s all the time a 22-year-old college kid who spent his school days drawing fast cars needed to build one off the coolest electric motorcycles we’ve ever seen. It’s enough to make us want to slap all the grade school teachers who ever told us to quit doodling during social studies.

Tom Miceli built the Ion during his final year at Appalachian State University. He studied industrial design, and his senior project required him to create something that reflected all he’d learned. Given his love for getting from Point A to Point C while passing Point B in a blur, his choice for a project was a no-brainer.

“I wanted something eco-friendly that didn’t sacrifice performance,” Miceli told Wired.com.

Leveraging his years of experience riding dirt bikes, Miceli stripped a ‘96 Kawasaki ZX6 Ninja to the frame and went to work. The result is a DIY electric motorcycle capable of more than 70 mph and a range of 60 miles. Judging from the pics and the videos of the bike in action, the kid’s got talent to spare.

With only a semester to burn on the project, Miceli got straight to designing. He hashed out the details with brainstorming, sketches and CAD models, taking cues from some of his favorite bikes, including the radical KTM RC8. He went for a modern, almost futuristic look, but kept it within the range of something the average rider would buy right now. By the time he’d settled on the design and planned the build, Miceli had two months until his deadline.

He stripped the Ninja to a rolling chassis. The battery box that replaced the 600cc engine carries two dozen 40Ah lithium iron phosphate batteries. Miceli figures the pack has a total output about 3 kilowatt-hours. The juice powers a 6.75-inch AC motor rated at 43 horsepower and 95 foot-pounds of torque, figures that surpass the Zero S electric motocycle we rode. The total weight penalty for the electric drivetrain? Nil. The e-bike weighs as much as the bike he started with. It’s got a similar center of gravity, too.

The pack recharges in six hours from a standard 110-volt outlet. Miceli estimates the range at about 60 miles and has hit a top speed of about 70 mph. The bike has enough juice for the occasional burnout, but what about eye-compressing acceleration? Wheelies?

Sorry, not a chance … yet.

Even now, months after graduating, Miceli is still improving the bike. Next up are 60Ah batteries and a super-secret, custom-made, two-speed transmission that Miceli hopes will let the bike hit 50 mph in first and 100-plus in second. Where do we sign up?

The wiring was tricky, but dad, an electrical engineer, helped make quick work of it. To give you an idea of how efficient the system is, the LED lighting system (including the headlight) draws no more than one amp. Miceli said the hardest part of the project was fabricating the body because it was so labor-intensive. Because of the one-off nature of the bike and the limited budget, the bodywork was less than green, using polystyrene foam to create a form. But that doesn’t detract from the coolness of designing and creating your own bodywork. Although it was the hardest part of the project, Miceli said it was among the most rewarding because he got to see the bike take shape.

Ion cost $12,000, with about half that tied up in the batteries and drivetrain. It was little much for a college student to front, but thanks to a design grant from the local community college AB-Tech he was able to make ends meet.

Overall, we gave him an “A.” So did his professor. The rest of his teachers may be another story due to the amount of time dedicated to the build, but it was surely worth it.

“I didn’t build the bike for a grade,” he told us. “I did it because it was something I wanted to do and it was a gateway to getting a job in the field that I wanted.”

And how is the moto-design job search panning out? Not well so far. But with a portfolio like his, we’re sure someone will pick him up in short order. Hey you guys at Mission One and Zero Motorcycles — are you listening?

The clouds have opened, my prayers have been answered, the Pacific has parted, and DEUS is coming to America. The people that brought us some of the classiest custom motorcycles, bicycles and clothing, are now offering up their fine assortment of play-things for the US's enjoyment. No more will the images of Lovers' Land be figments of imagination. No more will the jpgs on our desktops be the closest we come to touching a DEUS original. Oh, and it's all happening right here in my very own backyard. Well, Downtown LA, at least.

The fine men and women of Deus Ex Machina searched high and low for the ultimate home for their US headquarters, and found that home within the walls of Secret Service. As I type, hammers are swinging and walls are toppling over on Industrial Ave. SS is receiving a serious face lift, and the crowning jewel will be DEUS USA taking over the second floor of the shop. We can expect motorcycles, bicycles, clothing, surf boards and everything else we've come to love about our friends to the South. I have long since been a fan of Deus's aesthetic, their involvement with the EPIC Lovers' Land tour, and now my love is solidified with their partnering with Secret Service. The grapevine has revealed that the store could be up and motors running within the next couple months. I for one can't wait.

I was lucky enough to tag along and witness the first ever USA-built DEUS cycle being delivered a couple days ago, The Grievous Angel. Keeping with the DEUS ethos, the bike was built in a small one-car garage in Marina Del Rey. They found their surfing-mechanic-turned-good-friend like all mechanics should be found - through the vouching of one of their buddies. Just like that. Michael, or "Woolie," is an ex-racer who grew up next door to Mert Lawwill. If that's not an impressive enough resume of someone capable of building anyone's bike, I don't know what is. I heard the bike, smelled the bike, felt the bike, and I am in love with the bike. It's the perfect culmination of all my 2-wheeled fantasies, and all built by a guy who cares just as much about the heart and soul that goes into the bike as the final product itself. The way it should be. I'll take two.

I also stopped by Secret Service, forced myself past the armed guards, through the velvet ropes and up the stairs to see for myself. Yep, it's under construction but I can already see the DEUS stamp all over the walls. I had to be sneaky with my iPhone sniper shots, but was able to shoot a couple off and email them to myself before my phone was confiscated and subsequently destroyed. No, the pretty fine gentleman of SS were more than happy to run me over their sketches and plans of turning their great shop into the finest in LA. When's the opening party?

Lamborghini Reventón Roadster: 20 Lucky Oil Sheiks Rejoice

Sporting the same stealth fighter-inspired angular bodywork as the standard Reventón that was unveiled two years ago at the same auto show, the new topless Lambo will reportedly make use of its all-wheel drive system to help the run to 60 in just 3.4 seconds. Top speed is expected to be well over 200 miles per hour, as you'd expect from an Italian supercar with a mid-mounted 650-horsepower V12 powerplant.

Perhaps looks modeled after an F117A stealth fighter, the 650HP, 6.5 liter V12, 211 MPH top speed and strictly limited production of 21 units weren't quite enough to urge you to buy one for the trifling $1.3 million asking price. It just didn't come with an open top, and that was inexcusable. Your prayers have been answered as the Reventón Roadster addresses the issue with a lift-off targa top and even greater exclusivity — only 20 units for this model. We'd consider one ourselves, but you can't get it in chrome. Oh, the price? Still a lark at a mere $1.75 million.

Canadian HTT Plèthore supercar gets previewed ahead of Frankfurt

Crazy that this car looks better than the new Mclaren!

Besides moose, Mounties and socialized medicine, most Americans know little else about our neighbors to the North. Especially for car people, Canada doesn't register in any significant way unless the Buick LaCrosse comes up. That might change dramatically once the HTT Plèthore LC 750 hits the streets. The brainchild of company principle Luc Chartrand, the Plèthore is a unique supercar that has been at least six years in the making. In fact we covered a previous version of the car when it was shown at the Montreal Auto Show in 2007. Back then it carried the Locus Plèthore nameplate.

Having lost the Locus and gained an LC 750, the production Plèthore features a carbon fiber chassis and body, a 750-hp 6.2-liter V8, a 6-speed manual transmission and McLaren F1-like central driving position, among other things. This Canadian supercar is set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, but HTT held a VIP preview of it Tuesday before loading it into a 747 bound for Deutschland. Autoblog friend and ace photographer Stephan Bauer happened to be in attendance and shared some photos and notes with us.

Although the interior still needs work and the pictured vehicle was pretty rough around the edges, this car will be shown in Frankfurt next week. Stephan adds that although similar to some other supercars in its overall shape and details, some of the things that make the Plèthore stand out are its bat-like scissor doors that go well past vertical, its protruding rear diffuser, its tasteful and functional HRE rims and the fact that it is probably the widest car he's ever seen at 89 inches haunch to haunch. That's bigger than the wheelbase on some small cars. HTT told the assembled group that 10 cars have already been pre-sold at a starting price of 395,000 $CDN. The SLS AMG is set to reveal it's gullwing-ensconced 6.3-liter V8 at next week's Frankfurt Motor Show. In the mid-Eighties, Porsche released the 962, a long-wheelbase variant of the 956, to compete in IMSA's GTP class and later in Group C (as the 962C). Even though IMSA's GTP rules stipulated that only one (unfortunately named) KKK turbocharger could be used, the 962 was bloody-your-nose fast.

This past weekend at the Monterey Historics, Mark Hotchkis proved just how fast the 962 was/is by lapping half the field in his class during a ten lap race. That's kinda ridiculous. In fact, the only car that gave Hotchkis any trouble at all was a nine-year newer ALMS Kremer-Porsche Spyder K8 (the same type of car Derek Bell raced at his final Le Mans). Anywho, we've got a righteous video of the 962 quite literally eating up Laguna Seca at 10/10s. Oh, and that metal wheel Hotchkis's left hand keeps fiddling with? That's the boost dial which can summon up to 50 pounds of pressure. Put another way, crank your computer's volume all the way up. Thanks to Dan K for the video.

While cars are definitely the conveyance of choice on the track at Laguna Seca during the Monterey Historics, there are enough motorcycles, scooters and mopeds zipping all over the paddock to make you realize that car people can very often be bike people as well. One pair of bikes that really caught our eye were the Ducatis you see above; One in Gulf Racing orange and blue, the other in the classic red and blue stripes on white of Martini & Rossi, better known as Martini Racing. That was the one that really captivated us.

Created as a tribute to Porsche, the Ducati 1098 S Martini Racing Bike was built to be displayed alongside the 1971 Martini Porsche 908/3 over the race weekend. This one-off Ducati honors the powerful and highly successful Martini Porsche and Lancia racing machines of the 1960's and 1970's. It looks awesome too, and we wish they would make more. And send them to our garage. Soon.

Gumpert Apollo Sport sets new record at the Nürburgring

German automaker and motorsports company Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur (yes, that’s how you spell it) manufactures some of the most extreme vehicles on the planet and has recently proven the merits of this claim with a new Nurburgring lap time for its supercar. The Sport is a mid-tier option for the company’s Apollo line of supercar models and for the run the car was optioned with a 700 horsepower version of its regular Audi-sourced 4.2-liter V-8.

The time set by the Apollo Sport is an independent recording noted by German magazine Sport-Auto and comes in at 7m 11.57s. Gumpert is claiming the 'road car' record for the ‘Ring but it’s well known that the Radical SR8 in road legal trim has clocked a blistering 6m 55s lap time.

The Apollo Sport was piloted by 26 year-old driver Florian Gruber on August 13, edging out the Donkervoort D8 RS06, which posted a time of 7m 14.89s back in November 2005, as well as the more recent Nissan GT-R and Corvette ZR1.

As for the car itself, the Apollo Sport comes with a tubular space frame of chrome-molybdenum steel with an integrated safety monocoque structure fabricated in carbon-fiber. The huge air intakes on the roof and side panels feed cold air to the twin-turbo mid-engine powerplant.

The Sport edition is differentiated to the standard Apollo thanks to the addition of a full racing aero package with a huge GT wing and lower front spoilers, while the interior gets comfort mod-cons not usually found in such vehicles. The list includes Alcantara trim, air-conditioning, a CD player and sat-nav, and even a reversing camera as standard. The list price for the Apollo Sport is €299,500 ($423,167) plus taxes.

Sweden’s Koenigsegg has closed its purchase of Saab from America’s General Motors according to a report from Reuters Newsagency this afternoon.

Although financing arrangements have yet to be finalised, the sale was agreed upon at an unannounced price sources claim to be “very low”.

“The price tag is non-existent but GM has a deal that grants them revenues as well if Koenigsegg manages to get Saab back on its feet,” a source close to Saab said.

The deal requires the Swedish government to guarantee a loan by Saab from the European Investment Bank. The bank is expected to process Saab’s loan application by end-September.

Sweden said on August 7th that it had received information on a possible pullout of investors backing the deal. But there has been no further statement by the government on the issue since then.

For better or worse, not all of us can be Sam Witwicky, swapping spit with Megan Fox and attempting to foil galactic evil robots taking the form of common automobiles. But then, there's nothing common about this particular automobile. It's the actual Saleen Mustang that played the part of Barricade from the first Transformers movie. And one lucky collector just got his hands on it.

One of only three made, this 2005 Mustang was built specially by Saleen and further outfitted by the props gurus at DreamWorks SKG for the film. The car started life as a Saleen S281 Extreme, with a 4.6-liter V8 and five-speed shifter, before being turned into the rolling Decepticon, for which the studio added a push bar, emergency light kit, white doors and decals aplenty. With only 4,550 miles on the odometer, minimal wear and tear, and unsurpassed bragging rights, bidding started on the Barricade Saleen at $1000 and the car sold at $36k – a far cry from the $100,000 - $300,000 they wanted.

Confederate Motors debuts P120 Fighter

Way back in 1991, Matt Chambers started Confederate Motor Company, intending "to create machines utilizing a holistic, avant-garde process for celebrating the art of rebellion." Seven years ago, Confederate Motors scared the Hellcat out of the motorcycle-riding public. Five years ago, they wowed the biking world with a Terminator-like two-wheel contraption they dubbed the Wraith. Yesterday in Monterey, the company unleashed its latest challenger to the conventions of two-wheeled conveyance, the Confederate P120 Fighter.
The Fighter uses a massive 120-cubic-inch motor (1966cc) that provides 160 hp and 145 foot-pounds of torque.

It's mounted in a lightweight aluminum frame, and promises nimble handling and a no-compromise riding experience. Should be a helluva performer, plus it looks like a 22nd century mount for an apocalyptic rider, which is probably worth as much as the performance to most would-be buyers. Many of the people who saw it unveiled at the Quail Lodge today couldn't believe it was actually a production vehicle. Nissan GT-R – Rapid Response at the Nurburgring

You’re looking at the world’s fastest fire engine, which despite carrying an extra 200 kilograms of specialised equipment on board, this GT-R will still lap Nurburgring’s Nordschleife circuit in less than 8 minutes.

With hundreds, if not, thousands of accidents each year on the this feared track, during the so-called public sessions after 5.00pm each weekday, emergency response time can be mean life or death.

You see, “The Ring” as it is known to enthusiasts worldwide, is a staggering 22.8 kilometres per lap, complete with 72 corners, many of them blind. The problem is, when you add punters driving at speeds up to and beyond 300km/h, things can go horribly wrong, as it so often does.

The specially designed Nissan GT-R has been presented to the Nurburgring operator, as a gesture of appreciation for their collaboration in developing the budget priced supercar.

German based M&M Automotive did the fire fighting conversion on the car, which has a 50-litre water tank in place of the two rear seats, in addition to a medium pressure extinguisher system with a winding device for the hose.

The system can spay foam up to 18 metres and can fight fire for up to two minutes on one tank.

On April 23 2009, a factory spec GT-R Nissan achieved the incredible lap time of 7 minutes 26 seconds at the Nurburgring.

When it was announced that Porsche would be the featured marque at this year's Monterey Historics, I knew we were in for a vintage racing treat come August. That time has nearly come, and we can't wait to see the dozens of Porsches that will be at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend. One third of the 450-car field will bear the Porsche shield, many of which are already at the track to prepare for the upcoming three days of racing.

As is tradition, the Porsches gathered on the straight between turns three and four for a group photo. As you can see, the collection of legendary racecars is unbelievable. Along with the Porsches that will be on track, special models will be on display from the Porsche Museum in Germany, and hundreds of owners have also traveled to Monterey to join in the festivities. SSC Plans To Build World's Fastest Electric Production Car

Shelby SuperCars already has the world's fastest production car title belt, now they're planning to up the ante, introducing the Ultimate Aero EV: The world's fastest electric production car, with a ten minute charge time.

Not only is SSC claiming that they're creating the world's fastest electric production car, but they're also claiming that it'll be one of the fastest charging electric cars in the world. Their Nanotechnology Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery pack is said to take only 10 minutes for a full recharge on a standard 110 volt outlet and will grant the driver a total of 200 miles on a single quick charge. Watch out Volt, Tesla and Fisker.

While the super fast charging time sounds great, it's the electric motor system that piques our interest. SSC has dubbed it the AESP, or All-Electric Scalable Powertrain, and what makes it unique is its scalable horsepower rating and liquid cooling in a single light-weight, compact package. The AESP is being developed to fit a wide assortment of applications from a 200 HP mid-size car; a 500 HP light truck or SUV and up to 1,200 HP with a "piggy back" setup for heavier duty trucks, buses and military equipment.

SSC won't say which of these motors the Ultimate Aero EV will receive, but our guesses are leaning heavily on the 1,200 HP version.

ZR1 vs Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce

If you want the prestige you get with a Ferrari or Lamborghini, you have to pay, and pay dearly. If you want the performance you still have to pay, just not as much.

With companies like Devon, Shelby SSC, Saleen and others vieing for the supercar title, they all have to really take a close look at the good 'ole Corvette. Of course, not the base model but the 100k ZR1. It's a fraction of the amount you would pay for any of the above, ahead in refinement, rock solid warranty, and its as brutal and fast as the Italian boys.

This really is an unbelievable video. First of all, you got two of the hottest cars in the world. Second, the Lambo should be a bit quicker than the ZR1, right? It has around 30 more horsepower, weighs about 60 pounds less and has AWD, allowing it to exit corners more quickly. Plus, the Lamborghini has a factory driver at the helm while the Corvette is being piloted by (ugh) an auto journalist. Only thing is, well... watch for yourself.

One more thing – not counting the "joke's on you, rich people!" Reventon, the LP670-4 SV is Lambo's most expensive vehicle and the ZR1 is (obviously) Chevy's. Can you image a race between the two brands' cheapest vehicles? Aveo vs. Gallardo LP560-4. I got 5 on it.

Preston Tucker beat the odds and design/developed a product superior to what the big three were producing before they teamed up to crush him.
Although John Deloreans company failed, some would consider it a success in that the product was good (eventually) and the high numbers of cars on the road today back that up.

Gerald Weigerts company Vector Areomotive, was one that was high on concept, high on technology, bad on timing and awful with management. The cars that they produced over the years are legendary in the automotive world, but not all legends are good. The most famous being of the unfinished vector that was sold to Andre Aggassi, who returned it in short order after it caught fire on the highway.

However, when the car was on, it was ON. Amazing angular design that evolved with the times (it was the 80's) and performance that was heralded by journalists. The car had an attitude that made the outrageous top speed claims of 220+ mph seem reasonable.

Twin turbo, aluminum block v8, 3 speed automatic tranny, aluminum and fiber honeycomb chassis that was bonded and riveted together, Liner slide gauges patterned after jet fighter gauges, etc. The car had so much potential. It could have been Americas supercar.

There are many sites telling the tale of Vector's rise and fall, This being a particularly detailed one.

On a personal note, I'm a major fan of this car and the concept behind the company. When I was 10 I wrote Gerald a letter telling him so and asking for advice on how to create a car company. He never responded. Extremely disappointing.When I did get to meet him 17 years later, I shook his hand a little tighter than I should have.

You know what? I don't think this is crazy. As automotive racing evolves, people will be looking for new and more exciting (i.e dangerous) was to race. The Dodge Tomahawk started a trend, with bigger and crazier things to come.

Cramming a BMW V12 and a turbocharger into a quad bike wasn't enough for French bike builder Ludovic Lazareth, he needed more power, so he added ethanol.

Better known as a bio-fuel favored by Iowan farmers; Ethanol, or E85 in this case, has a higher octane rating (typically 100-105) than traditional pump gas, which allows higher compression ratios and more power. The engine actually makes only 350 HP in its current form, with the 150 necessary to take that figure up to 500 HP coming soon in the form of a turbocharger.

There's no fancy traction or stability control keeping all that power in check, so it's all going to be up to the rider being careful with the throttle and quick with the countersteering. Luckily, the rear track is much narrower than the front, which should work to counteract a quad's naturally tendency to dump riders on their heads, encouraging rear slide over grip.

Nurburgring's production lap record going down. Maybe.

This is the Devon Motor Works GTX supercar, which has been track testing ahead of its unveiling at this week's Pebble Beach Concours.

The GTX, which is due to go on sale next year, is being funded by businessman Scott Devon. These are the first official pictures of the car; previous images have been artist's renderings.

Although little information has been released about the car so far, its makers have announced that they will be chasing the Nurburgring production car lap record with it.

To this end, it has hired endurance racer Justin Bell, son of Le Mans legend Derek, to undertake the bulk of the development driving.

The Nurburgring's production lap record is currently held by Radical's SR8, which lapped in 6min 55sec.

Although unconfirmed, reports suggest the car will have over 650bhp and an ultra-light carbonfibre body. It also has a distinctive glass roof section, demonstrating the car hasn't been designed purely with track work in mind.

The interior is said to be close to production ready, and mixes a state-of-the-art electronic dashboard with a gear lever that harks back to the 1970s muscle car era.

The car has been designed by Daniel Paulin, the man responsible for the Fab 1 Thunderbird and the Focus C-MAX concepts for Ford.

What you are looking at here is not only a bad ass piece of equipment, but its one of the most successful, and well-traveled Corvette race cars in the world. It also happens to be one of the very few survivors of one of Chevrolet’s “back door” racing programs managed and implemented by Zora Arkus-Duntov.. Starting in 1968, this car was campaigned at Le Mans a total of 6 times, a record no other car has matched. The car is said to have reached speeds of 191 mph on the Mulsanne Straight. Cook Custom Choppers wins AMD World Championship of Bike Building

Considering America's well-known love affair with custom motorcycles, you might think that the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building would be dominated by U.S.-based builders. Interestingly, though, this year marks the first time the top prize has been won by an American, in this case Dave Cook of Cook Custom Choppers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The winning bike is called Rambler, and it's definitely not the typical custom Harley. In fact, it's not even powered by a V-twin engine. Instead, an air-cooled 550cc four-cylinder engine from International sends power through a modified BMW gearbox and shaft drive to the 21-inch rear wheel. See for yourself in our gallery below.

Second place went to another non-Harley-based custom built by Kris Krome Customs of Freeland, Michigan. Called the Re-flex-tion, the machine is powered by the mill from a Triumph T120. Found a Delorean for sale near the beach. Its an 83 model, 106+ thousand miles on it. The body, wheels and exterior are near perfect but the interior doesn't appear to have been cared for.

There are two things I love in this world: cars and motorcycles. I assume the same goes for you if you somehow found this little site. Everyday I open 2 dozen or more tabs across Firefox and catch up on all the car and motorcycle news. Might as well put it to good use and post the stuff I like- maybe this will be one of someone else's tab that's opened every day.
